Member Spotlight - Mae Harvey

Mae Harvey joined the Dufferettes in late 1980. Mae was recently featured by the New Jersey Golf Association’s spring edition featuring recognizing their most senior members. The article highlighted Mae’s tenure with the club and spoke about how she removed the barriers for herself as well as other in the state. On the club’s youngest members, Dana Grant, sat down with Mae to ask a few questions.

Q: Why did you choose golf as a life passion?

A: My husband and I were bowlers. I bowled for 60 years. My husband also got me into golf. Anna, one of the founding members, asked me to join the club.

Q: How did you learn to play golf? Did you have a mentor?

A: I learned by playing with my husband. We played during the twilight time. He was my mentor.

Q: Were you met with obstacles while playing golf? If so, how did you overcome these obstacles?

A: I’m not very good at chipping, I normally don’t chip.

Q: What are your favorite golf courses to play?

A: I play all over. I play golf at Weequahic a lot. That’s our home course. I’ve played in Bermuda, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Barbados, and Jamaica. I also play in Trenton, Union County and Morris County.

Q: What was your most memorable golf tournament?

A: Dowdy Tournament is my most memorable golf tournament. They put on a very good tournament and I would always win something.

Q: What golf clubs are you playing with now?

A: I have a set of Callaway’s and a Taylor May driver.

Q: Who is your favorite professional golf player?

A: Oh Tiger Woods naturally? On the women’s side, Nancy Lopez.

Q: My mother and I just became members of the Dufferettes as new golfers. What advice do you have for us?

A: Just come out and play! Enjoy playing the game and the people you are playing with! You have to enjoy yourself!

Q: What is your most memorable golf memory?

A: I came close to a hole in one Par 3 at Weequahic and in Maplewood.
